Can PSF/AIX connect to printers thru a switching unit

ABSTRACT: Can PSF/AIX connect to printers thru a switching unit
such as a 3814?

Customer wants to have a backup PSF/AIX server and needs to switch
his printers easily from one server to the other. How can this be
done? The only easy way I can think of is to use a 3814 switching
unit (or third-party equivalent). Is this possible?
Today, the customer has a PSF/AIX server driving 3 3827's and 1
3827. Each printer has a two-channel switch. The "A" switch goes
to the host, and the "B" switch goes to the PSF/AIX server. Of
course, they only use one "side" at a time.
For backup, customer would like to have two PSF/AIX servers - one
hot, one cold. Can we cable the printers to the 3814 switch unit,
and cable the servers to the switch unit? If that isn't doable,
is there a similar or better solution. Otherwise, the CE or
customer would have to physically disconnect/connect cables from
one server to the other.
Thank you.
A:
I checked with the lab in Boulder, and they use a 3814 in their labs
to switch printers between systems regularly (for example, to share a
single channel-attached printer between PSF/MVS and PSF/AIX). So your
proposed configuration should work as long as you follow the correct
procedures for stopping and restarting queues.
Thanks for using ASKQ.
