ABSTRACT: Can I have multiple "logical" queues for IPDS TCP/IP on
PSF/AIX RS/6000?

I am reading in the PSF/AIX Print Administration manual that
when I am adding a TCP/IP IPDS printer to the system: "Decide a
printer name that you will use as the queue name when submitting jobs to
the TCP/IP-Attached IPDS printer." Can you clarify this?
Does this mean that I can't have multiple queues attached to this
printer as I would other printers. That is to say have a queue that
has Two up Default or a PS to AFPDS queue. I notice later in the text
that I can allocate queue devices to this printer but that seem more
to do with improving performance and how much RS/6000 resource are
given to that printer. I would like have multiple "logical queues
for that device and I need to know can those queues be addressed
form remote non RS/6000 platforms ( eg WINDOWS work stations connected
via NETWARE HP UNIX Processors, MVS 370, etc) Thanks.

You can do what you want, in a slightly different way. It is true that
you can only have one active PSF/AIX queue for any IPDS printer.
That's because only one instance of PSF/AIX can "own" an IPDS printer
at any one time. You have a couple of options:
1) You can set up multiple local AIX queues that point to the PSF/AIX
queue. This is described in the PSF/6000 Installation Experiences book
available from PENPUBS. See the section on setting dedicated PostScript
or AFP printers (I think some of that is in the appendix, but don't
have the book in front of me to verify it.)
2) You can define multiple queues to a single printer and manage the
access by one queue at a time through the use of timers (job interval
shutdown timer, for example).
The PSF/AIX Print Administration book has a chapter on printing to
PSF/AIX queues (including AIX queues that front-end them) from remote
clients. There is information on MVS, VM, AIX/ESA, AIX/6000, OS/2,
OS/400, and SUN SunOS. There is not information included for Novell
because my interns and I did not have that configuration available.
There is an ASKQ item I wrote a couple of weeks ago that has the details
if you'll do a search on PSF/6000 and FLeX/IP or Novell. If you can't
find it let me know, and I'll get the specific item number for you.
I hope that helps.
