PSF/AIX: Questions on landscape ASCII and Novell

Customer has an Ethernet Novell 3.11 LAN being served by two HP
File Servers. They are interested in our 3130 printer and the
ability of PSF/AIX to allow them 2-Up Printing of their reports.
Today they print on impact printers 132 character positions. With
PSF/AIX converting this ASCII data into AFPDS how will this print
on a page from the 3130, Portrait or Landscape? The concern is will
they be able to disconnect their impact printer when the 3130 is
installed. If they will not get all of their data on a page (due to
truncation) what action is required to correct this?
The second question relates to their Novell Environment. Will PSF/AIX
operate in an environment with two Novell Servers?
I have a diagram of their environment that I can FAX if that would
help.
Thanks...
A:
You have a couple of options, depending on the customer's data stream.
If the customer's ASCII data has no escape sequences (other than line
feed, carriage return, or form feed), then PSF/AIX can use a page
definition to map the data however the customer would like--portrait,
landscape, two up, four up--whatever you can normally do with a page
definition. And of course, you can specify fonts either in the pagedef
or on the CHARS parameter used by ACIF for the pagedef mapping to make
sure the data fits on the page.
If the customer's data has ASCII escape sequences (that conform to
the Proprinter II or Quietwriter III set), then while PSF/AIX can not
map the data with a pagedef, you can still print it. There is a
description in Appendix C of PSF/AIX Print Administration
(S544-3817-03). The net of it is that you can set a dedicated
queue up that prepends an ASCII escape sequence before the customer's
print jobs that, in your customer's case, cause the job to print
landscape. You can also change the fonts that ASCII jobs use as well.
You can't do two-up in this way, but you should certainly be able to
print rotated ASCII jobs of 132-characters. (The default orientation
would be portrait.)
Or your customer can change the application to include those ASCII
escape sequences in their data before routing it to PSF/AIX.
As far as your Novell question, there are several ASKQ items libraried
on PSF/AIX and Novell. If you've not already reviewed them, you should
be able to find them using a search argument of PSF/6000 or PSF/AIX and
Novell. If you can't find them or if they don't answer your question,
please reopen.
Thanks for using WWQ&A.
