PSF/AIX: Want To Print Multiple Copies Of Certain Jobs

ITEM: RTA000155757

Q:
Topic thread:

 PSF/AIX

| Revised 3/23/1999 to correct some erroneous information.

I am using the AFP Driver (specifically the AFP 300 driver) to create
AFPDS output. I have 8 to 10 jobs where I need to print multiple copies
of the job. I am using the AFP driver under NT to create AFPDS output
which I then lpr over to an IPDS queue on the PSF/AIX side (AIX
4.3.2). My problem is the NT side will not allow me to select the
number of copies I need to print. I do not want to create mulitple
formdefs with the copy option set to the copies I need for each job if
I do not have to on the PSF/AIX side. I know which jobs by name require
the different copy requests, so I am wondering if there is a way on the
PSF/AIX to add the copies parameter as the job is hitting the specified
queue. We tried adding the copies parameter once the job was in the
queue, but nothing happens and the enq process never returned our
prompt.

I have searched ASKQ database and there was a mention of two
options. One was to do an NFS on the NT side which would allow PSF/AIX
to grab the job from the NT side and then we could create AFPDS output
and add the copies parameter as we sent the job to the selected IPDS
queue. The other option was to customize the backend program (ainbe) so
that it would look for the job name and then respond with the
appropriate copies parameter for the print job.

I would like your help in determining (1) if there is a better way
(what is it and how do we implement it) or (2) if the ways I mentioned
above are the only ways to make this work, how can I get information
in implementing either of them. The customer has expert AIX personnel
so we are looking for some direction to help them implement this.

This is the last hurdle in getting an InfoPrint 3000 into production
for a retail/distribution customer so I would appreciate your help on
this. By the way, I am in the early stages of talking to them about
InfoPrint Manager, but we are about 4-6 months away from getting that
into the account.

A:
In addition to the two options you listed, you could set up multiple
| PSF queues that have the varying copies attributes on the backend.
If the number of queues required for this approach is not acceptable,
then this is not really an option.

| Note that you could not specify a default formdef with multiple copies
| in a subgroup because that will produce uncollated copies as described
| in RTA000035646.

The most highly recommended option is the writing of a custom script
that takes in the job name and then, based on the job name, determines
how many copies to print. This definitely can be done. To get it
accomplished, you can either go through Printing Systems Professional
Services or the AIX Supportline could also do the work. If you take the
latter path, they will probably need some help from the Printing Systems
Technical Sales Support group, but that is not a problem.

I hope this helps.
