I-DATA 7913 IPDS PRINTER LAN ATTACHMENT CONFIGURATION INFO
I-DATA 7913 IPDS PRINTER LAN ATTACHMENT CONFIGURATION INFO
Some customers have encountered unexpected results when using the
i-data 7913 IPDS Printer LAN Attachment device due to the placement
of comments in the BOOTPTAB file. This problem is easily avoidable, and
this FLASH provides information on the correct placement of comments.
The usage of a '#' (number sign, also known in the U.S. as the pound
sign) as a comment indicator should be avoided except when the '#' is
the start of a new line. By definition, lines beginning with the '#'
are ignored by the bootp daemon during processing. If the customer
attempts to use the '#' comment other than at the start of a line,
unexpected actions may result.
The following examples show correct and incorrect usage of the comment
indicator. (The backslash "\" is used in AIX as a line continuation
character.)
1. CORRECT:
# The following 7913 is in Room 12
P4028: tc=subnetida.trlan: ht=6: ha=00036EFFFFFF: \
ip=9.24.51.75: bf=/tcpip/etc/ida7913.cfg:
2. CORRECT:
# The following 7913 is in Room 12
P4028: tc=subnetida.trlan: ht=6: ha=00036EFFFFFF: \
ip=9.24.51.75: bf=/tcpip/etc/ida7913.cfg:
# Load 4/15/94 code
3. INCORRECT:
# The following 7913 is in Room 12
P4028: tc=subnetida.trlan: ht=6: ha=00036EFFFFFF: \
ip=9.24.51.75: bf=/tcpip/etc/ida7913.cfg # Load 4/15/94
Using an OS/2 bootp server, the above declaration will return
the correct IP address, but no boot file name will be returned
(never loads later levels of microcode).
4. INCORRECT:
# The following 7913 is in Room 12
P4028: tc=subnetida.trlan: ht=6: ha=00036EFFFFFF: \
ip=9.24.51.75: bf=/tcpip/etc/ida7913.cfg: # Load 4/15/94
Using an OS/2 bootp server, the above declaration will not
return the IP address (never answer the broadcast request).
The only difference between this example and the one immediately
preceding is the presence of a colon following the bootfile
specification. If you have started the BOOTP daemon with
five-level debugging (bootpd -b -d -d -d -d -d), your bootpd
window will see the broadcast request and "Hardware Address Not
Found" messages repeated continuously until you power off the
7913 or correct the BOOTPTAB file.
5. INCORRECT:
# The following 7913 is in Room 12
P4028: tc=subnetida.trlan: ht=ethernet: ha=00036EFFFFFF: \
ip=9.24.51.75: bf=/tcpip/etc/ida7913.cfg: # Load 4/15/94
Similar to the preceding example, but using an AIX bootp server
on an ethernet LAN, the above declaration will not return the
IP address (never answer the broadcast request).
To summarize, comments in the BOOTPTAB file should begin with a '#' in
column one, or unexpected results may occur.
