Q:
Topic thread:
Printer Systems (PRINT - NA/ATS)
 PSF/AIX

A user required use of an exclamation point using coded fonts which
point to code page T1V10500. They modified the IBM-distributed
T1V10500. (Let's ignore for a moment the advisability of this action.)
What they did worked for them in their PSF/MVS environment. (In
post-mortem analysis, I am assuming that this is because they never
marked their fonts in their host libraries to indicate they are resident
on the printer.)

When they began to use MVS Download to move work down to a PSF/AIX &
PSM platform, they began to notice that their exclamation points became
right brackets. This was an indicator that "their" T1V10500 was not
being used. They tried changing resource-contexts and search orders and
nothing helped. In fact, they even swept through the system and renamed
every copy of T1V10500 they could find, hoping to at least cause an
error. Instead, their print job just kept on printing the same way and
never complained about T1V10500 being missing.

When I heard this, I began to suspect that whatever they were doing at
the RS/6000 was overridden by the printer, in other words, the code page
must have been resident on the printer. I suggested they rename the
"nores" sample GRD file for code pages to codepage.grd and fortunately,
that cleared up the problem.

I just want to verify that my analysis is correct; that their inability
to use their version of T1V10500 was because T1V10500 was considered by
PSF/AIX to be resident. Any other pertinent thoughts would also be
appreciated. Thanks.

A:
Your analysis is correct -- PSF/AIX and InfoPrint Manager for AIX by
default try to use printer-resident fonts whenever possible. In effect,
it's the reverse of the host environment where you have to take
explicit action to mark fonts resident. In the AIX environment, you
have to take explicit action to disable use of printer-resident fonts.

Thanks for using ViewBlue.
