Printing from VSE to a PSF/AIX System without PSF/VSE

Topic thread:
Printer Systems (PRINT - NA/ATS)
 PSF/AIX
  PRINT XPSF6000

Hello,
My customer wants to implement the following scenario with their Host
VSE:
An rs/6000 running PSF/AIX plus Comm Server V5 for AIX as a printer
controller using PSF/AIX for the printing output from the Host.
The rs/6000 is already attached to the host via a 370 parallel channel
in blkmux format.
The customer does not want either to buy PSF/VSE nor use HCON for the
conecction. They want to print directly to a printer attached on the
RS/6000 because the RS/6000 is already behaving as a 3174 controller.
It is possible that POWER from VSE sends printer outputs to PSF/AIX in
the way they are requiring?

A:
No, the two spoolers (AIX and POWER) do not communicate interactively.
Without HCON or PSF Direct there is no other way for the spoolers to
communicate.

The only other option is with TCP/IP, which I doubt, by the way things
sound, they would be interested in.

Q:
Thanks for your response. I want to ask you one more question.
At this time I have made the following test site with the customer:
PSF/VSE, a rs/6000 channel attached to the S/390 running Comm Server for
AIX V5 and PSF/AIX plus PSFDirect; the communication between the host
and the RS/6000 at SNA level is working well, the PSF/AIX is also
working well with a 3160 printer ethernet attached, but the PSF Direct
connection between the PSF/VSE and PSF/AIX is not working at all.
I cannot get a session between the Host and RS/6000 for PSF.
Would you please tell me how to get a manual, a how to procedure or a
redbook that could helpme doing this kind of config, taking in count
SNA Server or Comm Server instead of SNA Services?
Also, I'm not sure if I need to specify a transaction program in the AIX
machine related to PSF/VSE, because Comm Server for AIX does not give me
that feature. Please help me as soon as you can.

A:
There is a known problem with Comm Server for AIX V5 that manifests
| itself when trying to use PSF Direct. The APAR for CS/AIX V5 is
| IX81436.

They have worked with other customers using CS/AIX V5 to get PSF
Direct working, and they can assist with your other configuration
questions as well.

I agree that we need to update the documentation to reflect the changes
that CS/AIX V5 introduces in its panels, and I will be working with
Boulder to do that in the future.

I hope that helps.

Q:
Thanks for your information of the APAR, I already have installed
it on the RS/6000 with success.

We have done all the configurations steps stated on Program Directory
for PSF/VSE V2.2.1 and IBM InfoPrint Manager for AIX
PSF Direct Network Configuration Guide for S/370 (S544-5486).
Remember that we are only using PSF for AIX.
The problem we have got at this time is that we can't start the printing
device on the VSE or we don't know how to do that.

The steps we followed from the Program Directory were:
1.- compile the job example APTSPSF.
2.- run the command PSTART DEV,E62,SYSPSFFA,R and we get the messages
 E62 waiting for work

For the RS/6000 we did the following
                    CS/AIX V5 PSF VTAM

We need your help in defining the rigth steps for printing jobs from
the host (VSE) to RS/6000 ?. We don't have that information on those
manuals.

A:
I believe this is being handled by PSF/VSE L2 via PMR number
00950,000,683 which describes the same scenario.
They need to issue the following command:
     PXMIT DEV, devname, ALTER LOGDEST=LOCAL
