There is a customer here in Brazil that has a RS/6K 7009-C10 with AIX
V3.2.5 and PSF/6000 V1.2. The customer has a Printer 3900-0W1 connected
with the RS/6K through an Ethernet 10BaseT TCP/IP and it is working
fine.

The customer bought an IBM Info4000 Duplex and connect in the same
environment but it is not working. The connection is working fine,
because we can test by "ping" command and we get the "answer".
When the customer sends any job to the printer, the INITING status is
displayed in the RS/6K and the RECEIVING status appears in the
Printer's panel, so the status in the RS/6K goes to DOWN and the jobs
are ENQUED (we got the same problem in duplex or dual simplex mode).
If we send the same job to the Printer 3900-0W1, it prints ok.
Is there a PTF to solve this problem ??

A:
You will need to look at the error.log file for the print queue that
is setup to print to the Info 4000 printer. The error.log file for
that queue should be in the directory /var/psf/printername and that
file should contain some type of 'error' as to why the queue is going
down.

Q:
I asked the customer about the error.log file and he sent it to me.
Below is the error.log file:

I need to know which model InfoPrint 4000 in order to answer your
question. Note that PSF/6000 V1.2 has been out of support for nearly
two years (September 1996). Your customer should upgrade to InfoPrint
Manager for AIX (and depending on the model of InfoPrint 4000, they may
have to). But first let me know what model InfoPrint 4000 is installed,
and I can then provide additional guidance.

Closing awaiting your response.

Q:
The model of printer is InfoPrint4000-ID1/ID2.

A:
The microcode level in the InfoPrint 4000 supports PTOCA level PT2 and
reports that information to the host PSF (in this case, PSF/6000) during
initialization. PSF/6000 V1.2 does not support PT2 but only PT1, thus
the error you are seeing. Because PSF/6000 is no longer supported,
your customer will need to upgrade to either PSF/AIX V2.1 (with PTFs)
or preferably InfoPrint Manager for AIX in order to print to the
InfoPrint 4000.

I'm told that the level of microcode at which PT2 became the standard
was 8.4. That level is required in all InfoPrint 4000s (as a minimum).
If you were to upgrade the microcode level in the 3900-0W1 to 8.4 or
later, you would also have this problem on that printer.

Here's how I came to that conclusion. I used the "psfmsg" command to
look up the text of your message:

  $ psfmsg 0420-014
0420-014 ERROR: The specified printer does not have full IPDS
  capability, status code X'________'.
  0420-014
EXPLANATION: PSF can communicate with the printer specified in
the accompanying message, but this printer does not have complete
Intelligent Printer Data Stream (IPDS) capabilities, and the resulting
printed output might contain printing errors. The status code in the
error message indicates which IPDS capabilities were present or
missing. To interpret the status code, first expand each of the three
hex bytes into bit representation. For example: X'FF DC 50' expands
  to '11111111 11011100 01010000'. A '1' indicates that a capability is
present. A '0' indicates that a capability expected for this type of
printer is not present. Starting with the leftmost bit, the
  capabilities are:

SYSTEM_ACTION: PSF continues processing the print job.
USER_RESPONSE: Note the missing capabilities identified by the status
code in the message. Check the printed output, and determine if it
is acceptable. If it is not acceptable, either use local problem
reporting procedures to report the printer problem or send the print
job to a printer that has the missing IPDS capabilities. In addition,
verify that the target printer is supported by the level of PSF
  you are using.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Your error message contains the hex characters 'BF FF F0' which
translates to binary '1011 1111 1111 1111 1111 0000'. If you match
these expanded bits to the chart of capabilities, you will see that
the error message says that your InfoPrint 4000 does not support
PTOCA version PT1 which is what PSF/6000 V1.2 supported.

Please get your customer to upgrade to a supported level of code.
Again, I recommend InfoPrint Manager for AIX since it is our strategic
product on the AIX platform. PSF/AIX is currently still marketed and
will continue to be officially supported for defects until Jan. 31,
2001, but it will not be functionally enhanced. Note that InfoPrint
Manager requires AIX 4.2.1, while PSF/AIX can run on AIX 3.2.5 or AIX
V4; however, AIX 3.2.5 is also out of support. Your customer really
need to upgrade both AIX and PSF.

Thanks for using WWQ&A/Viewblue.
