Attaching 3800 printer to RS/6000

Printer Systems (PRINT)
PSF/AIX
I see an item in the database that says PSF/6000 will work with a 3835
printer. The salesmanual says it doesn't. I have a customer with a 3800
production printer and they want to know how they can hook it up to an
RS/6000. On the hardware side I believe I can do this off of the 370
channel card. Is that correct? Then what software can I use to drive
it. I would think PSF/6000 would work but the information is
ambiguous. Please clarify. Thanks.
A:
A 3835 can be attached to an RS/6000 and driven by PSF/AIX, but a 3800
cannot. The 3835 can be attached to the S/370 Channel Emulator/A
adapter (feature code 2759 for various *microchannel* RS/6000s) and
driven by PSF/AIX (make sure you have the latest PTFs). The 3800 is
older technology and not a true IPDS printer -- it uses CCWs instead,
which PSF/AIX does not support.
I suspect the 3835 salesmanual entries predated the availability of
PSF/AIX and were never updated after PSF/AIX was announced. If you
review the salesmanual for PSF/AIX (5765-505) and search for 3835,
you will find that both models of the 3835 are supported.
Thanks for using WWQ&A.
