Are there any transforms available to give ascii output?

ABSTRACT: are there any transforms available that would put out an
              ascii data stream? (NOT PCL)

..
I have a customer who has a large network of ascii and ipds impact
printers. We have talked to them about infoprint mgr as well as psm
with psf/aix. There ar holes with both solutions. One question came
up however. Is there any transform that will take scs or ipds in and
transform out ascii so that it can be printed on an impact printer.
I've never heard of anything that would do this, but thought I'd
check. Thanks.

A:
No, there is not a transform that will output ascii available for
PSF/AIX, PSM or InfoPrint. The fact that your asking about SCS as
an input datastream makes me wonder if this question is really for
AS/400 instead of AIX on a RS/6000.

Q:
Some jobs would be coming from the AS/400 to the RS/6000. The RS/6000
would be the "print manager". They're also putting in SAP. Does this
change anything? You don't need to respond to this unless it does.
Since you asked I thought I better tell you.

A:
Sally, our PSF/AIX and IP Print Manager people are still on holiday.
However, I will try to help you get started until the experts return.
I would start by looking at the source of the printing. If, for example
you had a windows application or another operating environment in which
the AFP driver is available this will help with some of your problem.
By using the AFP driver an AFPDS datastream will be generated and
the IP Mgr can use it to print to IPDS impact printers such as the
6400. Also, since you have an AS/400 system you may transform the
datastream at the AS/400 into either AFPDS or ASCII to be sent to the
AIX system.
1) Use HCON on the AIX system to receive the SCS datastream and
convert it to line data that IP Manager can pick up and print on the
6400.
2) USE the HPT at the AS/400 system. Then use TCP/IP at the AS/400
to deliver it to and AIX queue to be picked up by IP Mgr.

Note: The IP Manager added support that was not there in PSF/AIX for
IPDS Impact Printers. This is great news for us impact people and
something that we have been looking for. Regarding your comment on
holes: Of course there are holes, every printing solution has holes
and tradeoffs. There are planned enhancements to the IP Manager in
response to customer requirements. If you have additional requirements
contact the SW BLM's and let them know what you need. Regards
