Q: PSF/AIX: message 0420-131 file can not be opened
Topic thread:

Hello,
We are in a process at a winback customer to sell 6 times 3160 and
PSF for AIX and PSM or InfoPrint Manager.
However the decision to sign the contract is postponed for the following
reason:

************************************************************************
Customer is using LPRAFP from an UNIX system to print data on a PSF for
AIX system attached AFP printer.
Often he get the printed message 0420-131 file can not be opened
After a long search the reason was: forgotten to specify a pagedef on
the LPRAFP command with datat=line.

Question: WHERE ARE THE MESSAGES if something is going wrong because
wrong or forgotten parameters are in the LPRAFP command ??

Of course the end user likes to see if something went wrong.
************************************************************************

Thanks.
A:
The most common cause for message 0420-131 when using datatype=line is
that acif/line2afp was unable to complete the transform for some reason,
usually a missing resource or incorrect syntax. Since it couldn't
complete the transform successfully, there is no file for PSF/AIX to
print, thus the 0420-131 message.

By default, acif (line2afp) will write its error messages to stdout. The
way to capture messages from acif/line2afp is to specify the -omsgdd
parameter with a path and file name on the lprafp command; this will
create a file on the RS/6000 containing the acif messages for that job.
This should be okay for an occasional debug.

There is no standard facility in PSF/AIX for sending those messages back
to the user who submitted the job, although a creative shell script
programmer could write a backend for an AIX queue that would catch the
job from lprafp, acif the job, check the msgdd file for the return code,
if rc=0 send the job to print, or if not send a message back to the
submitter. However, that would require custom programming on your part.

PSM in conjunction with PSF/AIX would not be able to feed back those
messages from ACIF either. I checked with the developers, and
InfoPrint Manager does a better job than PSM of capturing messages
from ACIF/line2afp. All the ACIF messages will be logged in the
server's error.log file, and in the event of a problem, the user will
receive a notification message (5010-204) that their job stopped
printing due to job or printer errors. Though it won't pinpoint the
exact cause of the job's not printing, at that point you will know to
look in the server's error.log file to see the ACIF/line2afp messages
and isolate the problem.

I hope this helps. Please reopen this item if you have additional
questions.
