PSF/AIX: PSF Direct over ESCON/FDDI to IP4000

ABSTRACT: PSF/AIX: PSF Direct over ESCON/FDDI to IP4000

PSF/AIX
..
I would like some help in validating an AIX configuration to
support printing MVS datastreams via PSF direct and printing
LAN datastreams via PSF/AIX.
We plan to configure the following system:
- MVS host and AIX server connected by ESCON
- AIX server and IP4000 IR1/IR2 connected by FDDI
- LAN workstations and AIX server connected by TCPIP
My questions:
1) Is it possible to have the MVS host send print jobs to the IP4000
over the ESCON/FDDI link using PSF Direct?
2) The AIX connectivity software has changed since our announcement of
PSF/AIX 2.1. IBM SNA Server/6000 has been replaced by Communication
server for AIX (5765-652). Is this the only software I will need to
permit MVS to send jobs over the ESCON channel? The announce letter
for Communication server for AIX refers to another software product
ESCON channel connectivity for AIX (5765-603). Is this product
required in my proposed configuration?
3) In September we announced the InfoPrint Manager software to
replace PSF/AIX. This customer will likely upgrade to the
InfoPrint software. Will the InfoPrint Manager software work with
my proposed configuration?
Thanks for your input.
A:
R1) Yes. For PSF Direct to communicate between a host system and the
RS/6000, the only criteria is the ability to establish an LU6.2
conversation between the two systems, and that is supported over
ESCON between MVS and AIX. More on the requirements below, and
I'll then transfer this item to the AIX Support Line to verify
my understanding of those requirements.
The InfoPrint 4000 IR1/IR2 does support FDDI attachment to PSF for
AIX "for selected RS/6000 models" (as described in the Salesmanual).
I'm not current on the hardware, but I think that means that only
certain RS/6000s support the direct FDDI attachment of the 4000 to
the RS/6000 (as opposed to connection through the 8260). Let me
know if you need me to verify that part.
R2) My understanding of the software requirements on the RS/6000 are
that you would need AIX V4, Communications Server for AIX
(5765-652) with the SNA Channel Connectivity Feature (feature
code 4024), plus the ESCON Channel Connectivity for AIX program
(5765-603). The combination of these will provide the software,
microcode, device drivers and data link support that you require
for this connection. (Announcement letter 296-073 for Communications
Server 4.1 describes this better in the section on "Ordering Notes"
than does ALET 296-390 for Comm Server 4.2.)
You'll also need the mainframe communications software; let me know
if you have questions about that by reopening this item.
R3) Yes, InfoPrint Manager supports PSF Direct. Communications
Server for AIX continues to handle the LU6.2 connection between
the systems, so no change there.

I'm transferring this to the AIX SNA queue to verify my comments in
my second response below relating to the software required on AIX to
enable an LU6.2 session over an ESCON connection between an RS/6000
and an MVS mainframe. I appreciate your help.
A:
The descriptions regarding Communications Server (5765-652) are correct.
After installing the software described above, you can establish an
LU6.2 session between AIX and MVS. Then in addition to that you need the
channel connectivity (described above) to be able to use ESCON.
If you need additional information, please let me know. Thank you.
