ABSTRACT: Which is best way to send AFPDS to JES spool - directly
or via Upload in PSF for AIX?

..
Does my customer really need the Upload function of PSF for AIX?

Customer has a third-party check image / check statement formatting
program running on a Sun. The application creates AFPDS. Do they
need to send it to PSF for AIX and use its Upload function to put
the print file(s) on the JES spool? Can they just use some other
function (perhaps lpr/lpd) to do the same thing?

Thank you.

A:
If it were as easy as using lpr/lpd, then we wouldn't have written
AFP Upload. Seriously.

PSF/MVS requires that the X'5A' of each structured field in an AFP
datastream be in column one. UNIX (including AIX) and PCs don't have
the concept of "records"; they produce their data output in stream
format. If you were to ftp AFPDS from AIX to MVS or VM and browse
it, you'd see that it appears as one long continuous stream of data,
not the variable blocked records that PSF/MVS requires. That's why
we originally wrote the reblocking utilities, DUVSREB first, then
AFRREBLK: for customers who wanted to transfer an AFP file up to the
mainframe and print through PSF/MVS. The steps in the manual process
were to transfer the file, run AFRREBLK to reblock it on the mainframe,
then submit it to print. You can still do this, and the AFRREBLK CLIST
is provided with PSF for AIX in /usr/lpp/psf/utils/reblock.

AFP Upload does all that for you automatically. To the user, it
appears that s/he is submitting a job to a local AIX queue. Behind
the scenes, PSF/AIX and AFP Upload take that job, use either an SNA
LU 6.2 application or a TCP/IP sockets application to send the job
to the MVS host, reblock it and submit it to print to the JES spool.

AFP Upload is a much better solution, and I hope your customers will
agree.
