Q:
Environment: PSF for AIX, 3900 printer
Because of performance, more than one queue device is used for printing.
This causes that sometimes one queue device "overtakes" an other queue
device and the sort order of the jobs in the stacker is not the same
as they were submitted. Is it possible to keep the order and use several
queue devices?
A:
How are jobs being submitted? Is MVS Download or NPF involved to send
jobs from MVS, or are jobs being submitted to PSF/AIX from other LAN
clients? If you can let me know additional detail on the customer's
configuration, I'll be glad to get you an answer on this.
Q:
The customer is a bank, which uses a PC based archive solution. This
solution submits EBCDIC line data over a Novell network to an AIX
queue. The PSF backend program has been modified to do LINE2AFP and
ENQ (this has been done to set all necessary flags). The archive
program submits chunks of data, which all have the same size (in terms
of MB - not pages). I can't tell how many MB one job has, because this
varies day by day. But they have to be printed FIFO.
A:
In the current release of PSF/AIX for jobs coming across the LAN,
there is no way with multiple queue devices to enforce the FIFO
order for printing. I spoke with a specialist who thought that
this might be accomplished through some custom code (though further
analysis of your customer's environment would be necessary); you
may wish to pursue a fee-based services offering for this capability.
Thank you for using WWQ&A.
