Question........:

Is it possible to transmit files from 5765-505 PSF to a CD
instead of a printer?
Thanks for any advice
Answer..........:

Well, depending on what your caller wants to do, the answer is yes.
If the customer wants to store PSF printed output for archive purposes
so that it can be retrieved for viewing, rather than printed and
stored,
ie, a more modern way than creating microfiche for viewing, then
the answer is yes.
There is a product called OnDemand for AIX, 5765-662. This will take
printer output and store it on magnetic disk, mag tape or OPTICAL disk
as print images. There is a viewer component that runs on OS/2 or
windows workstations that allows the user to search the files, find the
correct printout / document, and display it on the screen. There is
function that will take the PSF overlay (the image that replaced
pre-printed stationary, and also display this on the screen, so that
the user will see the printout as though it was on paper. OnDemand
also has access controll and logging facilities so that a log is kept
of
who viewed what, and certain documents can be denied to certain users.

Note that we are talking about Optical disk here, which usually means
WORM (write once read many) technology. These look just like CD's, and
I have assumed this is what your customer means.

The customer will need an RS/6000 as the server, running AIX/6000 v
4.1.4
(5765-393) as the minimum level. He will also need DB2 for AIX V2.1.1
(5765-454), as this is the database used to store the images. He will
probably need ADSM for AIX V2.1 (5765-564) to manage the storage, so
that
he can decide on which files are kept on magnetic disk before being
migrated to optical disk. This will allow him to have a paperless
printing policy, so that reports for immediate use are kept on mag disk
and long term on optical disk, or perhaps on mag tape.
There is also facilities to print to paper, or to fax (using 3rd party
software). There are some good descriptions of these benefits in the
customer part of the full pletter. (I can send to you softcopy if you
want). Number is ZP96-0310.

Apologies for taking a bit long to get back to you on this one.. please
let me know if you need more info. Just re-open the IQ.
