XLOCK UNDER AIXWINDOWS 1.2.3 AND XSTATION
ITEM: RTA000031458
QUESTION:
Just finished upgrading a customer and my RS/6000s to AIX 3.2.3
extended, AIXwindows 1.2.3 and Xstation Manager 1.4? Whenever I
run xlock from the console, it works fine with the DISPLAY variable
set or not set. On the xstations with the DISPLAY variable set
I get the following message when I try to execute xlock:
"1386-116 xlock: can't lock (xstation name)'s display."
However, when the DISPLAY variable is not set and I execute xlock
from a xstation, the console is locked. Under AIX 3.2.0, AIXwindows
1.2.? and Xstation Manager 1.3 it worked fine. What has changed
in the new releases and modifications of the software to cause xlock
not to work anymore?

A: The problem you are experiencing is not the result of a change in
the Xstation Manager or AIXWindows. The problem arises in the new
syntax needed for the x11r5 MIT version of 'xlock'.
To lock up an Xstation using the new 'xlock' client, your customer
will need to add the '-remote' option on the xlock command line as
below.
xlock -remote
If you don't want to bother with this added flag every time you start
'xlock' then you can modify the '/usr/lib/X11/app-defaults/XLock'
file. The line to change appears below.
XLock.remote: false
Simply change this value to true and your 'xlock' will now lock your
Xstation without the added flag.
Further information on the new 'xlock' client can be found in the
'List of Commands' entry for 'xlock' in InfoExplorer.
