XDM DID NOT READ XSESSION OR .XSESSION FILES.

QUESTION:
My customer just installed a NCD Xterminal to a RISC Model 340.
The xdm, however, did not read the Xsession or $HOME/.xsession
as is supposed to.

Any suggestions regarding where the problem could be?

---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
A: There are several possible reasons while your customer's 'xdm' session
would fail to use his '$HOME/.Xsession' file. Perhaps the best
solution I can give you is to simply enumerate the possibilities and
let you check them one at a time.

   1) View your '/usr/lib/X11/xdm-config' file. Verify that the
following line exists. (If it does not, xdm will not come up.)

       DisplayManager*session: /usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xsession

(This resource points xdm to the initial Xsession file)

   2) Check to see if the file '/usr/bin/X11/startx' exists. If it
does then xdm will go through the following list and execute the
first file it finds in your customer's home directory.

       .Xinit .xinit .Xinitrc .xinitrc .xsession

(Note: If your customer has a $HOME/.xinitrc file, it will be run
and $HOME/.xsession will not. To run $HOME/.xsession, it will be
necessary to remove the $HOME/.xinitrc file.

   3) Your $HOME/.xsession file must be BOTH readable AND executable by
'user'. If it is not, it will not be executed. ('startx' checks
to see if the file is readable.)

   4) If your customer is using the 'failsafe' option (clicking on the
little button that says 'Use System Defaults') then your
customer's $HOME/.xsession file will not be run.

   5) It is possible that your $HOME/.xsession file is spelled
incorrectly. Verify that it is spelled '.xsession', not
       '.Xsession'.

---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
