HOW DO I SPECIFY THE AIXWINDOWS BACKING STORE

QUESTION:
Customer is running with AIX 3.2.3 extended and AIXWindows 1.2.3. xdm
is enabled. The application that customer intends to run requires that
the window being brought up with the backing store option. Usually, it
is achieved via "xinit -bs", in the xdm environment, what is the best
way to start window with the bs option? Can it be done after X is up?

---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
A: For the backing store option to be enabled within 'xdm', you will
need to make a slight modification to your '/usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers'
file. Simply modify the line that looks similar to

       unix:0 local /usr/bin/X11/X -T -force

adding the '-bs' option to the end of the line. This will enable
backing store support on all screens. (The effect is identical to
'-bs' option used with the 'xinit' command.)

Unfortunately, there is no way to enable the backing store option in
the middle of an 'xdm' session. It will be necessary to stop and
   then restart 'xdm'.

---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
QUESTION:
What about an Xstation? In the file /usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers, in
addition to the console, I also have a line "xst1:0 foreign" for Xstation
for Xstation, should I append /usr/bin/X11/X -bs to the Xstation entry?
Is there a way to do -bs on a user basis? How much more memorywill the
-bs option take?

---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
A: Let me answer your questions in the order you asked them.

   1) Should I append to the Xstation entry?

No. Xstations always provide the option of using backing store
to client windows that request it. There is no need to append the
       '-bs' option to this entry.

   2) Is there a way to select backing store on a per user basis?

No. Using xdm, backing store is selected for the entire 'xdm'
session. In other words, either the entire xdm session will
default to using backing store, or it won't. Please note,
however, that individual clients can ask for or refuse the
default backing store values. (For more information on client
control of backing store, see InfoExplorer, using the search
       word 'saveunder'.)

---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
