IS /ETC/PROFILE SUPPOSED TO BE READ

QUESTION:
I have just installed X11.5 on my system, and have some questions
regarding XDM and how it reads the configuration files. First I think
I have a general idea of how and when the xinitrc, Xsession, .xsession
files are used, but I am having a problem reading my /etc/profile or my
$HOME/.profile. I researched an X11.5 book and read through everything
on X11.5, but have not found how or where these files are called. I read
item BQPMW and in it it states /etc/profile and /etc/environment will
be ignored by xdm, unless you adapt xdm to the aix environment. It goes
on to tell you how to add an if statement into the .Xsession to read the
profile. I tried this, but it did not work for me.
Are the /etc/profile, /etc/environment or the $HOME/.profile files
suppose to be read, or is the proper way to put everything in the
set up is done the other way. Is there some other work-around to have
these files read?

A: I added the following line to the /usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xsession file:
. /etc/profile
This ensures that the system wide profile will be run for every user.
I added the following line to my $HOME/.xinitrc file:
. ./.profile
This ensures that my user's profile will be run every time I login.
The /etc/environment shell is run from the /usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xsession and
the /usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0 files already.
