QUESTION:
What is the difference between X11r4 and X11r5
---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
A: I compiled this list of changes between X11R4 and X11R5 from the MIT
documentation and information provided by development.
Font Server
The font server protocol from MIT is now supported. This will
allow all fonts to be served from one machine on the network;
thereby saving disk space and increasing ease of networking X
servers from multiple vendors.
Scalable fonts
Both scaled bitmap and outline fonts are now supported.
X Input Extension
Allows X applications to get input from devices other than
the keyboard and mouse.
Xcms
The X Color Management System provides support for
device-independent colors.
Resource Databases
per-screen
A new SCREEN_RESOURCES property has been defined.
Useful foe multi-head environments.
wildcarding
Use of the ? character is now supported.
include
Use of #include syntax in resource files is now
supported.
XT
maintained binary compatibility at the data structure level
PEX
Now an MIT supported feature
Internationalization
Now supported by MIT.
None of the MIT software uses the facilities as yet.
AIXWindows Customizing Tool
An IBM-provided tool to assist users in setting application
resource values.
XDesktop

Performance Improvements
Tutorial
Menu stippling/Enhanced context menus
AIC 1.1.1
Equivalent in function to UIM/X version 2.0.
Support for mult-byte ILS characters.
Performance enhancements use less memory and allow faster
file loading.
Several usability improvements over previous release.
Motif
Now version 1.1.4
New default root menu
Changes to the /usr/lib/X11/app-defaults/Mwm file may cause
unexpected behavior. Please make a note of the current
values before upgrading.
Supported clients:
xauth
xclock
xdm
xhost
xinit
xlock
xmodmap
xopen
xpr
xrdb
xsetroot
xwd
* all the samples that are linked to /usr/lpp/X11/bin are unsupported.
Significant changes to supported clients:
aixterm
Now supports draggable scrollbars (similar to xterm's)
Use middle mouse button to drag scrollbar. First
button and third button scroll forwards and backwards
by line.
Scrollbar menu options were moved to the mode menu.
-C option redirects console output to shell running in aixterm
xdm
Motif-based
xinit
Now using the MIT xinit. Read the /usr/lpp/X11/README file
after installation.
This will NOT work on x-stations.
Note "--" required before server options.
xlock
Now supported
Clients cannot catch the "CTRL-ALT-BKSPACE". Recommend using
-T option when starting server. (xinit -- -T).
xmodmap
-pke option added. Allows printing of current keymap table to
standard out in the form of expressions that can be edited and
fed back to xmodmap easily.
xrdb
Now supports SCREEN_RESOURCES property.
Further information is available in the latest release of InfoExplorer.
