XWINDOWS ON RISC AND PC'S
ITEM: RTA000029379
QUESTION:
My customer's environment is as follows:
RISC Model 530 Server, Ethernet, with PC clone users running an
XWindow emulator. Currently on their 530 Server, they only have
an ASCII display and run text based applications. So, for users
directly logged in to and attached to the RISC they do not need
AIX Windows....but...their PC users do.
So my question is, can the PC users get an AIX login, say by telneting
and then use their resident XWINDOWS software (say Hummingbird) to
create the XWindow environment for them, without having AIX Windows
on the server, or is there some interconnection that has to go on
between AIX Windows and the emulators like Hummingbird?

A: In order for the proposed configuration to work, you will need
to have some (but not all) of AIXwindows on your RISC Model 530
Server. As a MINIMUM on the RISC Model 530, you will need to
install:
X11rte.obj
X11rte.ext.obj
No other interconnection has to go on between AIXwindows and the
emulators. The Hummingbird software on the PCs should include
all necessary TCP/IP support.
These components are needed because the PC users will be sending
requests for Xclient services. The Xclient needs to be able to
locate the necessary subroutines in its libraries. The entirety
of AIXwindows is not needed on the RISC Server, since for each PC
using its own resident Xserver software, this software should
have its own libraries to support the applications being run
on that particular PC.
