QUESTIONS ON XWINDOWS VERSIONS
ITEM: RTA000027465
QUESTION:
The customer has several questions on X11 release differences.
I have read through the announcement and salesmanual, but the customer
wants more details because they need to look at the trade-offs
of having to migrate from one release to another.
1. How are the performance advantages going from X11R4 to X11R5
accomplished?
2. How are the performance advantages between X11R4 and X11R3
accomplished?
3. What are the differences between xterm and aixterm?
4. Are the changes made by xmodmap permanent? Where is the best place
to put the changes?

A: The exact methods used to enhance performance amongst the various
releases of AIXWindows is proprietary information and cannot be
disclosed. If the customer is interested in seeing some performance
enhancements, I recommend they obtain the source for MIT X11R5, which
is public domain.
If the customer is more interested in what performance improvements
exist (instead of how they are accomplished), then the following may
assist you:
- The MIT release of X11R4 was intended to be the "optimization"
release, designed to increase performance relative to X11R3. Thus,
there is a significant performance increase in X11R4 from X11R3.
- Release 5 is intended to be the "internationalization" release,
adding more flexible support for fonts, languages, natural
languages, and other capabilities required for world-wide use.
- The salesmanual entry for 5601-257, AIXWindows Environment/
6000, describes the most important performance improvements in both
R4 and R5 as shipped by IBM.
AIXTerms are xterms that have been enhanced to provide a large degree
of compatibility with HFTs. This includes compatibility with NLS and
other AIX-specific tools and settings. Note that these capabilities
will become less prominent after X11R5 becomes popular; since R5
encompasses many of the concepts that 'aixterm' was modified to
provide, they may not be entirely necessary anymore. AIXTerms no
longer support the Tektronics 4014 emulation provided by 'xterm'.
Yes, 'xmodmap' changes the mapping on the server until it is reset.
The best time to invoke this command is before any windows are opened
at all; this will guarantee that all clients are effected by the new
mapping. "Where" to put the actual call to 'xmodmap' depends on the
startup sequence you are trying to use; I would probably put it as the
first command in my "$HOME/.xinitrc".
