IN AIX X-WINDOWS HOW TO ACTIVATE A WINDOW

ITEM: RTA000027388

QUESTION:
Customer running AIX 3.2 and X-Windows. He has several Suns and
wants the AIX X11 environment to mimic them in regards to window
activation. On the Suns when you move the pointer into a window it
activates it to receive I/O but does NOT raise it (bring it to the
top of the active windows). I have not been able to recreate this
on AIX. Using the autoraise I can have the window activated AND
raised but this is not what he wants. He wants to have several
windows stacked and move the mouse into the window on the bottom of
the stack and enter input WITHOUT the window coming to the top of
the stack. Any ideas?

---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
A: I followed the procedure below to successfully implement the
   desired functionality:
     1. Acquire root user authority. Example:
           su root
     2. cd /usr/lib/X11/app-defaults
     3. Edit the file "Mwm". Example:
           vi Mwm
     4. Add the following line to the file:
           Mwm*keyboardFocusPolicy: pointer
Note that if there is already a "Mwm*keyboardFocusPolicy"
line in the file, this line must be deleted.
     5. Save the file and exit the editor.
     6. Start (or restart) the Motif window manager (mwm).

This response assumes you are using the Motif window manager.

The setting of the "Mwm*keyboardFocusPolicy" resource to
"pointer" makes Xwindows send input from the keyboard to
whatever window the mouse pointer is in. If other resources
have been set to certain values, however, then it is possible
that you may still have a problem. For example, if
"Mwm*focusAutoRaise" has been set to "true", then when the
mouse pointer goes into a window, the window will raise. Note
that these other resources may be set in other files, such as
in the "$HOME/.Xdefaults" file. If you have any further
trouble in getting this to work, just respond back with a
description of the problem, and I will let you know what
resource to set to what value to correct the situation.

---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
