CAN XSTATION'S PRIMARY SERVER BE TAKEN DOWN
ITEM: RTA000040559
QUESTION:
My customer has the following scenario:
- RS/6000 34H/"A" with 2 Xstations using it as primary boot server
and machine "B" as secondary boot server (Xstations "1" and "2").
- RS/6000 34H/"B" with 1 Xstation using it as primary boot server
and machine "A" as secondary boot server (Xstation "3").
They will be bringing the "B" machine down frequently. They have
tested bringing "B" down and when rebooted Xstation "3" comes up
fine off of the "A" machine, so no problems there.
My questions are:
1) I understand that the Xstation must be rebooted after "B" goes
down, is this true or is there a way for it to just switch
automatically?
2) To perform maintenance on "B" they would like to do the following:
While machine "B" is still up, on Xstation "3" (which has booted
off of "B" but is now up) simply login to machine "A". Then they
would like to take "B" down without disturbing Xstation "3" which
booted off "B" but is now logged onto "A". Is this possible?

A: Your understanding is correct, you must reboot.
No, the Xstation gets its fonts from the boot host and relies upon
it for paging, therefore, if it needs either it will not function proper-
ly.
