SLIP AND PING PROBLEMS OCCURRED AFTER AIX 3.2.5
ITEM: RTA000054791
QUESTION:
Customer upgraded from AIX 3.2.3 to 3.2.5 using update_all.
After the upgrade, SLIP no longer works. Customer entered
the following command:
/etc/slattach tty1 9600 '"" AT&F3S58=2DT16192689715\r CONNECT ""'
The modem dials, rings, picks up and negotiates, then gives error
message:
slattach: The device open successfully /dev/tty1.
slattach: 0821-296 Cannot set line discipline for /dev/tty1 to slip.
ioctl(TXSETLD): There is a request to a device or address that does
not exist.
slattach: 0821-300 ifconfig command must be run for this tty before
slattach can be run.
sl0 is up and running. What could've caused this problem?
Customer tried to ping that RISC machine from a device on the same
network, it works O.K. sometimes and failed ocassionally. This
problem also happened after the upgrade.
What could've caused these problems? How can the customer fix them?

A: This seems like a "sl0" and "tty1" mismatch. Try using
"sl1" and "tty1". With 3.2.5, when you use smit to configure
an interface on tty1, an interface named sl0 is created. AIX
V3.2.5 has fixes which were supposed to cause the names of SLIP
interfaces to correspond to tty device names. To stop the
cross-references the slip interface for tty1 should be called
"sl1".
Thank You
