COMPONENTS

IBM markets the 10BASET daughter card option for several of the
RISC/System 6000 models which provides a intergrated ethernet on the
planer. For all other RISC/System 6000 models (except the model
730), IBM markets a 10BASET transceiver which connects to the RISC
via the DIX connection with a transceiver (AUI) cable. Both options
provide the user with an RJ-45 (female) interface into the 10BASET
network environment. Many other vendors provided 10baseT transceivers
which can be connected to the RISC via AUI cable also.
The hub units are integral parts of the 10BASET network. IBM markets
10baseT hubs (8250, 8260) as do other vendors such as Black Box
Corporation and SynOptics Communications.
The hub units provide an RJ-45 (female) interface to allow
connection of several devices to each hub unit. These
connections are point-to-point connections i.e. the cable
would go from an RJ-45 (male) connector at the hub, to an RJ-45
(male) connector at the transceiver/adapter card for the DTE.
Twisted pair wiring is used between the hub unit and the DTE
equipment. Two-pair of 24 AWG, unshielded twisted pair is the
most common cable used for this environment. The 10BASET
specification calls for segment lengths of up to 100 meters (328
feet) of twisted-pair wire between the hub and the DTE.
