AIX 3.2.3 SLOW TELNET INNITIATION AFTER POWER
ITEM: RTA000038247
QUESTION:
My customer run across a somewhat weird situation. They have a rs/6000
mod 560 running AIX 3.2.3. The 560 is connected to a UPS. Recently,
the customer location experienced a power outtage which didn't cause
any glitches at the 560 except all telnet initiations to the 560 are
very SLOW (2-3 minutes) before the connection is made. Once connected,
their application works at the normal performance level. When the
command lpstat is run, it also take a long time for each queue to
come back with a response.
Do you know of any reason that will cause this kind of symptoms and what
is the resolution?
---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
A: There are several possible reasons for the slow response time you're
experiencing. I'll list the possibilities below:
1) If the machine you're telnetting from is hanging right after you
type the command 'tn hostname', then the problem is with nameserving
on that machine. You'll need to verify that whatever nameserving
scheme you're using is working properly. If you're using DNS, check
your /etc/resolv.conf file to verify that it is still correct. If
you're using only local name resolution, verify that your /etc/hosts
file is still correct. If you're using NIS, verify that NIS is still
working correctly.
2) If the slow response time occurs after you see the word "Trying..",
then the problem is in the routing table on this machine or the one
you're trying to connect to or both. Check the routing tables with
the command 'netstat -r' (on AIX machines; on other machines you
may need to run 'route' or some other command). Verify that all
machines have routes to one another.
3) If you're telnetting to a RISC, and the slow response time occurs
after you receive the login herald but before you receive the "login:"
prompt, the problem is with name resolution on the RISC you're
telnetting to. Check all of the areas listed in number 1 above.
If you do reopen the item, please include answers to the following
questions:
1) What happens when you 'ping' between the two systems? Is it slow,
or is everything working properly?
2) What happens when you try to telnet using the IP address of the
other machine?
3) Are you using NIS for name resolution? If so, I'll have some more
questions for you after you append. I just don't want to spend
time on this topic now if you're not using NIS.
4) Is your nameserver still configured properly? Is 'named' still
running? Are all of your configuration files still intact? etc.
