CAN TCP/IP BE UTILIZED WITHOUT A NETWORK
ITEM: RTA000037134
QUESTION:
My customer has purchased SoftPC from Insignia solutions. While trying
to install the product we ran into some problems, and were then told by
their tech support that TCP/IP is a requirement, as SoftPC uses TCP/IP
for interprocess communications. Since it comes with AIX, that's not a
big problem EXCEPT, this is a standalone RS/6000, no lan. Also, it has
NO network adapters--no ethernet, token ring, etc. We are told that the
product uses a machine (in this case the RS/6000) as a 'license server',
and it must be able to utilize TCP/IP and ping itself. Do you know of a
way that this can be done without a network adapter of some kind?

A: No, TCP/IP requires a network adapter in order to be installed.
However, you could just as easily specify any available TTY for the
network device rather than an ethernet or token-ring card.
Therefore, to do what you want you would set up TCP/IP to work over
a defined TTY. It will not be necessary to have your computer
connected to any real network.
Therefore, the literal answer to your question is that a network
adapter is required. However, you could use a TTY defined for one of
the two native serial ports on the RISC System/6000 as the network
adapter (ie. you would be defining this as a SLIP connection). It is
not necessary, however, to be attached to any real network.
