UPS V.S. BBU FOR A MODEL 990
ITEM: RTA000054396
QUESTION:
Hi. We have a customer who is going to purchace a model 990 and
would like to know whether to acquire a seperate UPS to either
augment or replace the BBU that can be provided with the 990.
The BBU seems to be a nicely integrated DC only option but also
seems to lack a few things. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
The BBU only supplies DC power to devices in the rack and doesn't
have (as near as I can tell) an automatic shutdown option. Was the
BBu meant to be a "poor man's" UPS or am I missing some extra
functionality that it might provide?
Thanks for any and all help.

A: The BBU could be thought of as a "poor man's" UPS I suppose. You
should know that there is an RPQ (# 8A0895) for UPS available for
7015 rack-mounted systems.
Basically, you will only be able to support one CPU and five drawers
MAXIMUM with the BBU. Thus, if your rack includes multiple CPUs,
then only one will be left standing when the lights go out. You
will not have a console / tty to work with to shutdown the machine
because this will presumably be attached to the exposed wall socket.
Shutdown of the system with the BBU will occur automatically via
the /etc/rc.powerfail script at the end of 15 minutes. You can edit
the /etc/inittab file "powerfail" line to shutdown the system in a
more expedient manner (IE - within the guaranteed 10 minute limit of
BBU power) by entering the following:
powerfail::powerfail:/etc/rc.powerfail -tMM >/dev/console 2&1
where MM stands for the number of whole minutes to wait before
shutdown.
Finally, the Battery Backup Unit will overlap the Power Distribution
Unit and weighs 45 kg (100 lbs). Standard features only allow one
BBU per rack and there are currently no RPQs for multiple BBUs.
The UPS provides some additional capabilities which are listed in the
RPQ, some of which I have included below:
- Automatic self-test capabilities and a new high performance battery
backup system.
- Easy-to-read front panel display and simple touch-pad controls.
- Frequency and voltage regulation, power factor correction, and
reduced harmonics.
- Wide input voltage range, extending battery life and maximizing
battery availability.
- Software configurable performance features include integrated power
management with unattended shutdown capabilities.
- LAN/Relay connections for multiple CPU's available from Exide
Electronics.
If you have additional questions about this offering, please submit
feedback against the RPQ.
Thank you for using ASKQ/EQUAL.
