CAN 590 MEMORY SIMMS BE USED IN A J30?
ITEM: RTA000053980
QUESTION:
Customer has a complex of RS/6000 590 and 59H systems. They
want to be able to swap memory SIMMS between the 59H and a
new J30. Can 590 SIMMS be used in a J30?
---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
A: You cannot directly transfer uniprocessor memory cards to
multiprocessor (MP) machines. You can, however, transfer 16MB and
32MB SIMMs from your 590s and 59Hs to MP memory cards for the J30.
Unfortunately, you cannot transfer the SIMMs (2, 4, and 8MB) from
16, 32, and 64MB uniprocessor memory cards to the MP memory cards.
You can obtain credit towards new MP cards with a trade in, however.
According to the J30 announcement letter:
"IBM will exchange currently installed memory cards for equal
and/or capacity MP memory cards. The price for this exchange is
less than the list price for a new MP memory card."
You can use FC #4061 to convert 2 128MB cards on your 59Xs to one
256MB card on your J30. You simply transfer the 8 16MB SIMMs from
each 128MB card to the same 256MB MP memory card (16 SIMMs x 16MB
= 256MB).
You can use FC #4062 to convert 2 256MB cards on your 59Xs to one
512MB card on your J30. Again, you can simply transfer the 8 32MB
SIMMs from each 256MB card to the same 512MB MP memory card (16 SIMMs
x 32MB = 512MB).
For more information, please refer to the feature codes which are
described in the 7013-J30 Salesmanual entry and announcement letter.
Thank you.
