QUESTION:
I need to be sure that a memory card between a 390/590 and SP2
wide node are all compatible. Can I switch these around? I under-
stand that I need to keep the memory at least in pairs on the 590
and SP2 and ultimately in pairs of 4 to take advantage of the
memory bus width. I know a memory card on a SP2 is not the same
price as on a 590, are they really different and incompatible?

A: Memory cards and SP2.
The memory cards for the 390/590 systems are compatible with each
other in that they both use S4.5 memory. The memory cards are the
same in the Thin-POWER, Thin-POWER2, and Wide-POWER2 nodes and can
be interchanged with each other.
The base memory card (SIMMless card) can not be swapped between the
RISC 390/590 systems and the SP2 nodes. The memory SIMMs that plug
onto the base card can be swapped between the RISC 390/590 systems and
the SP2 nodes. The FRU numbers in the Common Diagnostics and Service
Guide for the memory SIMMs for model 390 and 590 are valid for SP2.
The FRU numbers for the S4.5 base memory cards for the RISC System/6000
models 390 and 590 are 65G1803 and 52G4729.
The FRU numbers for the S4.5 base memory cards for the SP2 nodes are
52G4801 and 88G3680.
Therefore, you would not be able to move the memory cards between the
models 390/590 and the SP2 nodes.
