QUESTION:
Disk drive questions:
1) My understanding is that the other scsi disk drive driver and the
2GB disk drive driver are the same, except that some ODM values are
different. What values are different and how do I find them?
2) How does the RS6k know the size of a OEM disk with out the
# tracks, # sectors and cylinders req'd by most other unix vendors?
3) Why is it that we can have 2x 2 GB drives in all of the current
7012 models except the 340 ? Does this mean if I buy 2 x 2 GB
drives for a 320 or 32h I will have cooling problems, power supply
problems... or something else.

---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
Question #3:
A: The RISC System/6000 Model 340 does support two internal 2 GB drives.
However, the 320/32H does not support two of these drives due to the
fact that the drives produce more heat than these models were designed
to tolerate (with a margin of safety). The excessive heat may damage
   the drive(s).

---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
Question #2
A: The following commands are to examine the Predefined Stanzas for the
"other scsi disk" and 2GB disk drivers. You can use the following
   odmget commands:

   odmget -q "type=osdisk" PdDv
odmget -q "type like 2000mb* and subclass = scsi" PdDv
   odmget -q "uniquetype=disk/scsi/osdisk" PdAt
odmget -q "uniquetype like disk/scsi/2000mb*" PdAt

You will probably want to save the output of these commands to
separate files. Notice that there are some differences in the
   stanzas.

---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
Question #1:
A: The two drivers are the same except for some varying ODM values.

The values you should check for differences are in the PdDv
(Predefined Devices) and PdAt (Predefined attributes) ODM files.
One way to compare these entries would be to execute the commands:

   odmget -q "uniquetype=disk/scsi/osdisk" PdDv
   odmget -q "uniquetype=disk/scsi/osdisk" PdAt

and compare the database values with

   odmget -q "uniquetype=disk/scsi/2000mb" PdDv
   odmget -q "uniquetype=disk/scsi/2000mb" PdAt

Also, the SCSI command "read capacity" returns the block size and
number of blocks on the disk. This is all the information that AIX
   needs to use the drive.

---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
