SCSI-2 REQUIRED IN A 580-590 UPGRADE
ITEM: RTA000042032
QUESTION:
A 580 to 590 upgrade requires a scsi-2 2GB disk. The question is
why is a scsi-2 2gb disk required in a 580 to 590 upgrade.
I need a development lab answer on this. I've heard that AIX must be
loaded on this but that can't be true since a reload of the machine
would have to be done.

A: Technically, the system will work fine with other types of disk. The
reasoning behind the 2 GB SCSI-2 requirement is to get the performance
one would have with a true 590. The point here is that they are going
to have a 590 and thus should expect 590 performance. If we allow
SCSI-1 devices rather than the SCSI-2 devices, performance obviously
will be impacted.
AIX does not need to be loaded on the new disk. However, you should
be aware that support for the model 590 standard with AIX 3.2.5.In
other words, you need AIX 3.2.5 on the machine before it is upgraded.
