QUESTION:
My customer has a RISC System/6000 on a Token Ring network. It
communicates to an ES/9000 via a 3174 gateway. The 3174 is channel
attached to the host and also resides on the TR network. The
customer's goal is to establish communication (via LU6.2) between
hospital applications which reside on the RISC and the ES/9000.
They have completed their SNA Services profiles and are now working
with the sendto & rcvfrom "C" programs to validate their work.
The customer is NOT using independent LU's due to the microcode
level of their 3174. The question is this: Is it possible to
have both a 'call' attachment and a 'listen' attachment active
simultaneously in their environment? They currently have ONE
Token Ring adapter. Based on some other ASKQ items, it appears
that the answer is NO. If this is true, it seems like these are
their available options:
1. Install a second Token Ring adapter, and establish separate
profiles (and VTAM PU definitions) for the call and listen
attachments.
2. Look at upgrading to SNA Server/6000 to support multiple PU's
per adapter.
3. Use independent LU's via the previously-mentioned upgrade in
3174 microcode (VTAM is a the correct level).
Is this assessment correct, or am I missing something? I would
appreciate your input.

A: The other ASKQ items you've read are correct- you can only have ONE
call OR ONE listen attachment per token ring card on the RISC using
SNA Services/6000. Your first two alternatives are the only valid
ones. Your suggestion about using independent LUs is not valid. Since
you can have only one attachment per adapter, this attachment has
to be EITHER call or listen.
Basically, you will need to pursue option 1 or 2 (that you listed)
in order to get the functionality you desire.
