SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE 3270 EMULATION
ITEM: RTA000035951
QUESTION:
I have read through several items and still require more info.
My customer has an rs6000 remotely connected to a 37xx and a mainframe
via an sdlc link. They want the users on the RS6k to be able to do
3270 emulation. What is required on the both the Risc and the mainframe
in terms of software?
I know that the rs6k needs sna svcs, does the host need anything other
than just vtam and ncp?

A: There are several options available for 3270 emulation on a
mainframe. However, using SNA Services/6000 and the AIX 3270
Host Connection Program/6000 (HCON) will probably be your best
choice. Below, I have listed some of the options for 3270
emulation.
The first option is the AIX 3278/79 Emulation/6000 for the
RS/6000. This software supports 3270 emulation but can only
support one active host session and therefore is limited in
that respect. The software requirements are as follows:
o AIX for RS/6000 on the RISC
o An IBM VM/CMS or IBM MVS/TSO environment to be operating
on the host system
o The IBM System/370 IND$FIlE program must be installed on
the host system to support file transfer
For the second option, all that is necessary is to install TCP/IP
on the Host. In this fashion, you would be able to use the
'tn3270' command to telnet to the Host and achieve multiple 3270
emulation sessions.
The last, and probably best option, is to use SNA Services/6000
and the AIX 3270 Host Connection Program/6000 (HCON). HCON
allows a RS/6000 user to appear to a 370 or 390 Host as a 3270
display (3278/79) or printer (3286/87). It provides a file
transfer facility, supports LUs 1, 2, and 3, and provides an API
for an application program to communicate with a host application
program or a 3270 session. HCON Ver 1.3 includes SNA LU pooling,
6098 attachment, and TCP/IP connection via 3172 or 8232 when
using 3270 telnet option. With HCON, you can also have up to 253
sessions per SNA Type 2.1 connection to a host. (SNA Services is
not required for HCON Ver 1.3 when running HCON over TCP/IP.)
For the HCON, the following will be required on the RS/6000 :
SNA Software Requirements:
AIX SNA Services/6000 requires AIX for RISC System/6000
on the RISC System/6000 system.
HCON Software Requirements:
AIX 3270 Host Connection Program/6000 requires AIX for
RISC System/6000 on the RISC System/6000 system. It
also requires AIX SNA Services/6000 for SNA Type 2.1
connections.
The S/370 or S/390, operating in a VM/CMS, MVS/TSO, or
CICS/VS environment, must have one of the following installed
to support file transfer:
o VM/CMS 3270-PC File Transfer Program (IND$FILE),
5664-281
o MVS/TSO 3270-PC File Transfer Program (IND$FILE),
5665-311
o CICS/VS 3270-PC File Transfer Program, 5798-DQH
In a VSE/SP or VSE/ESA environment, the File Transfer
Program is included with the host's base operating system.
