HOW DOES AIX ENABLE NETWORK PRINTING?
ITEM: RTA000053548
QUESTION:
Customer is considering PeopleSoft's payroll application. When
customer asked PeopleSoft how the application will handle payroll
checks, PeopleSoft responded: AIX will. I'm questioning whether this
is true.
The configuration will consist of PeopleSoft application running on
RS/6000 570/580 and network printer. What software would be required
to allow printing of checks on a network printer? Would smit allow
the definition of a "network" printer? thank you.
---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
A: Yes, this scenario is possible. AIX is capable of printing to
networked printers. There are several types of network printers
and several methods of printing to them. I will try to briefly
discuss all of them.
HP JetDirect
------------
HP provides a solution for networked printing with their JetDirect
line of products. This is a TCP/IP based unit that allows a printer
to be attached to either Ethernet or Token-Ring (depending on the
model). Fortunately, AIX has a built-in driver for this unit. All
that is needed for this device is a virtual printer for the print
server.
IBM 4033
--------
IBM provides a solution for networked printing with the 4033 line
of products. This is *not* a TCP/IP based unit, but, rather one
that uses its own protocol. With each unit shipped, a diskette
is provided that contains the device drivers for AIX (and other
operating systems). All that is necessary at this point is to
create a virtual printer.
TCP/IP Addressable Printers
---------------------------
Some printers (very few) contain network cards in them. In order
for AIX to print to them, they must have the LPD daemon running on
it. All that is necessary at this pint is to create a remote
queue from the RISC to the printer.
Remote Printing To Another Server
---------------------------------
If, for some reason, you do not have the capability to print to
a network printer from AIX but another machine does, you may be
able to remote print to that host and have it spool to the printer.
An example of this:
A printer does not have an LPD daemon running on it. A PC
may have the drivers to print to this. If you put TCP/IP on
this PC, you will be able to remote print to the PC and have
it print for the RISC.
Plain Remote Printing
---------------------
If you wish to centralize your printing to one server, you may
wish to remote print to that one server. You would just need
to set-up a remote queue.
If you have any more questions, you may re-open this item. I hope
this helps.
Thank you.
