CAN YOU USE A NAMED PIPE AS A VIRTUAL PRINT
ITEM: RTA000033095
QUESTION:
I am trying to create a named pipe on an AIX 3.2.3 system and then
use the named pipe as a virtual print device and tie it to a queue
(add a virtual printer in SMIT) to send output to a printer attached
to a terminal server. I created the named pipe using
"mknod /lts300/p9 p" command. This completed fine and I have a file
with the following characteristics in directory /lts300:
prwxrwxrwx 1 root system 0 Jul 07 06:30 p9
When I go thru SMIT to create the virtual printer:
smit spooler/manager local printer subsystem/virtual printers/
add a virtual printer/printer or plotter attached to host/
device name -> /lts300/p9
I get the error message: 0782-329 Not a valid device file name. Press
Enter to continue.:
Can I use a named pipe as a virtual print device? I have seen some
information that seems to indicate you can.

I did find a procedure that works:
1) touch /dev/lxx
2) Make the virtual printer thru SMIT
3) rm /dev/lxx
4) mknod /dev/lxx p
Note: The named pipe must be in the /dev directory.
