QUESTION:
I am trying to get information on a Capacity Planning Tool for the RS6K.
Last year I looked and there was a "QUICK" estimator for sizing RS6K's.
The environment I am looking at is a transactional type possibly using
CICS/DB2 on a RS6K. Any IBM Performance product or OEM recommendations
would be appreciated , also any HONE TOOLS that I may have missed.

A: 1. There is a new estimating tool called BEST/1 for UNIX, developed
by BGS with help from IBM. It will help in capacity planning
and design of systems from the ground up, however training
is needed. These classes are available to IBM marketing force
free of charge (limited seating, limited time period) in the
BGS Boston location. If you plan to do a lot of this, the class
would be a good idea. You can register for this class by calling
BGS at 1-617-891-0000 and ask for the Education Department.
Be sure to specify you are with IBM.
2. If you need a trained IBM marketing person to do this BEST/1
analysis for you, there are trained personnel in your area.
You can get a list of contacts in your area by sending
a profs note to DALVM41B(BEST1). This is the best option
in you will not be doing a lot of sizing work.
3. The BEST/1 product is available on tools disk for use by
IBM marketing employees that have been trained to use it.

You need to download this rather large package which contains
instructions and executable. It is password protected.
You must follow the instructions included, and send for a
password, and receive the password before the package will work.
Some canned workload models are included.
Problem: CICS & DB2 workload models are NOT included and will
be difficult to create.
