HOW DO I REMOVE MEMORY FROM A RS/6000?
ITEM: RTA000020565
QUESTION:
I have an RS/6000 550 with 256 meg memory. I want to remove
128 meg to see if there is any change in performance. How would I
do this? Does the CE have to remove the memory? Which cards to I
remove? Will the machine reconfigure itself?

A: This can be done by the service personnel, i.e. the person who does
the maintenance on the RISC System/6000. If the customer does his
own maintenance, then he can perform the task himself, or else have
IBM service do it for him.
The correct way to remove the memory from the system is to physically
remove the memory cards in pairs. Then you need to run the "diag -a"
command to remove the memory from the configuration.
There is a performance tool called RMSS that you may find extremely
useful when doing this kind of performance, benchmarks.
RMSS provides you with a means to simulate the RISC System/6000
with various size memories WITHOUT having to extract and replace
memory boards. Moreover, RMSS provides a facility to run an
application over a range of memory sizes, displaying, for each memory
size, performance statistics such as response time of the
application and the amount of paging.
In short, RMSS is designed to help you answer the question: How much
memory does the RISC System/6000 need to run a given application with
an acceptable level of performance.
The RMSS program is part of the AIX 3.1 Prototype Performance Tool
Package. RMSS and the other programs in this performance package can
be valuable tools for you in the future. If you wish, you can request
this tools package with the following command from your VM account:
