QUESTIONS ON 5796-735, DSMIT.
ITEM: RTA000039400
QUESTION:
This question is with regard to 5796-735 or DSMIT.
1. How many clients can a DSMIT Server manage?
2. Can you make one change via DSMIT and have it applied to multiple
clients?
3. Is there a way to create a user on multiple systems without creating
him on each server one at a time?
4. Can a client have multiple DSMIT servers?
5. Will DSMIT export HOME directory for a user created on a remote
system?

A: I will answer your questions in the order in which they were asked:
1) A DSMIT server can manage clients in 2 ways:
a) The "Working Collective", which is the set all of hosts where
commands will be executed on. This can be temporarily modified
to allow only certain machines for a given command. The limit
to the number of hosts defined in the Working Collective at any
time is 200.
b) By "Domains". A domain is a simpler way of defining the Working
Collective. When you define the Working Collective, you can add
or remove the hosts defined in various domains. Each domain can
have up to 200 hosts.
2) This depends on the nature of the command being executed. For all
commands that take only arguments: yes, you only have to do the
command once, and the change will take place on all systems. For
commands that require standard input, like for changing someone's
password, the command is executed on all systems but the
administrator must enter the new password for each system
individually. This is a restriction of AIX, not of DSMIT.
3) Yes, the user's account can be made simultaneously on all clients
in the Working Collective, but the password must be changed
sequentially.
4) Yes. Simply add all servers to the clients'
/etc/security/dsmit.hosts file.
5) DSMIT can export directories, including the /home directory.
This is done using the standard SMIT screens -- DSMIT is broken
down into 2 main parts: a slightly modified SMIT, and Domain
Management (this allows you to configure your domains and Working
Collective).
