VT220 LINES VARIABLE
ITEM: RTA000028828
QUESTION:
My customer has a 970 in a heterogeneous network. He uses VT220 terminal
emulation to access the 970 from PC's and xterms. Somehow the global
environmental variable "LINES" is being set to 34 causing SMIT problems.
The customer has used unset to remove this flaw, but he wants to
understand how this variable is set by AIX. Can you help?
---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
A: There is no global environmental variable "LINES" in AIX. The
LINES environment variable can either be set by the shell or be
included in a default start up script like /etc/profile. The
terminal can also be told line and column information via the
/usr/lib/terminfo description file for that terminal.
Some software may try to set specific environment information
for a terminal as well but AIX just uses the basic terminfo
description.
