7207 TAPE DRIVE ABILITY TO READ 60MB TAPE
ITEM: RTA000028233
QUESTION:
Can the 7207-011 read a 60 MB 1/4" tape? If yes, how do we go about
setting the tape density and do we have to use any special utility
program?
What about the 7207-001? Can it read a 60 MB 1/4" tape?
---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
A: Yes, a 7207-001 can read tapes created on a 7207-011 as long
as the 7207-011 writes the tape in a compatible QIC format. For
instance, tapes written by the 7207-011 in the QIC-525 format
cannot be read by the 7207-001 which may read tapes at a maximum
density using the QIC-150 format. The following chart, further
describes the supported QIC formats and compatible tape media
for these tape drive models.
+--------------+---------------------------------------------+
|Tape Drive | Tape Type Compatibility Format |
+--------------+---------------------------------------------+
|7207-001 and | DC300XL/P R QIC-24 |
|7207-011 | ** DC600A R/W QIC-120|
| | * DC6150 (600ft) R/W QIC-150|
| |*** DC6250 (1020ft) R/W QIC-150|
| | DC600XTD R/W QIC-150|
+--------------+---------------------------------------------+
|7207-011 Only | DC6320 (620ft) R/W QIC-525|
| | * DC6525 (1020ft) R/W QIC-525|
+--------------+---------------------------------------------+
* = recommended tape, for highest performance
and regular use.
** = not recommended with 7207-011; see document G010387 which
states the following:
7207 1/4-Inch Tape Drive Setup and Operator Guide,
SA23-2641-02, the 7207-011 tape drive will write
in QIC-120 format. DC600A tapes made by 3M are not
supported. Because of the abrasiveness of the tape
surface on these tapes and the impact this has on the
read/write heads on the 7207-011, the write capability
of the DC600A tapes has been restricted.
*** = not recommended, not tested, might work.
NOTES:
1. The DC6150 is the new name for the 3M DC600XTD
2. The DC6150 is preferred for the 7207-0XX
3. Generally, a high density drive can read a low density tape
but not write to it.
4. Also, sometimes a high density tape may be written to in a
lower density. A DC6150 tape could be used in place of a
DC600A to write the QIC-120 format. The DC6150 is less
coarse, which reduces head wear.
o Yes, all QIC formats that the 7207-001 can write are readable
by the 7207-011. The 7207-011 is backward compatible with the
7207-001.
o Yes, all 7207 models can read tapes created on the IBM 6157
model 1 (QIC-24 format-ECC set OFF), but 7207s cannot write tapes
to this format. However, all 7207 models can read and write to
IBM 6157 Model 2 tapes (QIC-150). NOTE: For tapes created
on a 7207 for a 6157-002, be sure that the ECC mode is Off.
HELPFUL HINTS:
The following chart should prove useful in configuring the different
density/formats for the individual 7207 tape drive set-ups in SMIT.

QUESTION:
You indicate that all models of the 7207 will read QIC-24 tapes (these
are 60 MB tapes). How do you go about telling AIX that the 7202-011 is
to read a QIC-24 tape? The SMIT settings for the 7207-011 are for 150mb
or 525 MB and I see nothing that suggests that the 7207-011 is aware that
the tape is a QIC-24 format. Does the 7207-011 automatically sense the
QIC-24 format if we select the low density setting?
---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
A: Yes, the tape drive should automatically sense the QIC format that
was used to write the tape and then read the data in.
