HACMP ON TOKEN RING VS HACMP ON ETHERNET.
ITEM: RTA000028095
QUESTION:
What are the differences and implications between an HACMP/6000
over Token Ring and one set up over Ethernet?
---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
A: From an HACMP standpoint, there is not any difference between the
setup of HACMP using ethernet and HACMP using token-ring. These
networks are first setup in AIX using the same procedures as always.
Then when HACMP is configured, It will use the interface's name and IP
address to make its calls. So the same differences still exist when
setting up the network in AIX, but when setting up HACMP to use the
networks, there is not any difference in the setup of the two networks.

QUESTION:
Are there differences in takeover time because
of the token ring architecture in how it detects the loss of a node?
I've heard about this but don't really understand it.
---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
A: You are correct. Token Ring has a 20 - 30 second latency over
Ethernet (1) because of the fact that Token Ring makes more attempts
to re-send packets across the network before it determines a failure
has occurred. This is a hardware limitation. Once takeover has been
initiated, there is no difference between Token Ring and Ethernet
takeovers.
(1) Ethernet is a registered trade mark of Xerox Corp.
