AIX PCSIM HANGS WITH LOWER CASE OPTION
ITEM: RTA000027685
QUESTION:
I have a CD with DOS executables and files with lower case names.
I am attempting to bring up PCSIM with the lower case (-case L) option.
I have tried it on the command line "pcsim -case L" and have separately
entered a line "case : L" in my simprof and invoked it with just
"pcsim". Either way, the simulator window comes up and hangs. I cannot
kill the session with either " pcsim" (since it's hung) or with the
window manager. I have to issue a "kill -9" on the process. When I
invoke pcsim and let it default to upper case, all is well (except that
I cannot read the CD). I am using AIX 3.2 and PCSIM 1.2.

A:
This problem is caused by creating an AIX directory to use as a DOS
directory, and using the "format" command while in uppercase mode.
During the DOS boot process, the file "COMMAND.COM" is executed.
With the lower case option turned on, DOS looks for "command.com"
instead which does not exist.
A quick fix for this problem would be to rename "COMMAND.COM" to
"command.com", while in AIX. Then you should be able to run pcsim in
lower case mode.
Also, this problem would not appear if you used an AIX file to emulate
the DOS directory. All filenames in emulated directories are always
named using DOS conventions -- thus forcing all of its files to be
uppercase, which will be readable.
For future reference, if you want to create a directory to be used
with the lower case feature, then the pcsim session must be in lower
case mode before you run the "format" command.
