CONNECTED TERMINALS THROUGH AN A/B SWITCH
ITEM: RTA000025680
QUESTION:
I have a customer with a RISC system/6000 model 320 with a wyse 185
attached through an A/B hardware switch. Depending on the position of
the switch, the terminal is connected to the RISC or to a COMPAQ System
Pro PC. When the customer changes the switch to connect to the PC from
the RISC, and then switches back to the RISC, the RS/6000 has logged
him off. Is there a way to get around this and keep his session active
even when the terminal is not physically connected to the RISC?
---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
A: Yes, there is a way that you can keep the RISC session active,
while switching to a COMPAQ System Pro PC. You will need to set
"clocal" and "nohang" to the STTY attributes for run time and
login field. This can be done as follow:
smit
Devices
TTY
Change/Show a Characteristics of a TTY
STTY attributes for RUN TIME
**** set "clocal" for this field ****
STTY attributes for LOGIN
**** set both "clocal" and "nohang" to this field ****
By setting the "clocal", it assumes that there is a line without
modem control.
By setting the "nohang", it specifies that a hang-up signal not to
be sent if the carrier drops.
As long as you don't request any data from the RISC, you will
not loose any data. However, if you request the data from the
RISC while you are switching to the a COMPAQ system Pro PC, you will
loose this data since the terminal is not available to receive it.
For additional on the "clocal" and "nohang", please refer to
InfoExplorer by searching under "stty" command.
