Raid 7137 usage and performance questions
ITEM: RTA000054900
QUESTION:
We are looking at a 7137 for a customer and want to use it in RAID 0.
We have two questions:
1.If the customer starts out with 3 drives in RAID 0, and then a few
months later would add another drive (still keeping RAID 0), what
actions do we need to do to use the 4th drive?
Do we need to totally backup the data and restore or can we do
something like an "extendvg" to the new disk.
2. Are there any performance numbers comparing the RADI 7137 and
regular SCSI drives?
Thanks for your help.
A: 1. Since the 7137 is considered one "hdisk", you will not need to
use any AIX commands to extend the array. This is automatically
cared for by the 7137 hardware. Specifically:
"When data drives are added to the 7137 Disk Array, the array
automatically remaps all the data to the larger configuration,
preserving access to any existing data."
- IBM 7137 Disk Array Subsystem Setup and Operator's Guide
(SA21-9652-00)
If you remove a disk from the 7137 Array AND the Hot Spare Feature
is NOT enabled, then all data in the array will be erased.
We always suggest backing up arrays before adding and (especially)
removing disks. You do not have to do this with the 7137 when
adding a disk, but it would be a good precaution.
2. Unfortunately, there is no performance data available for the the
7137; thus, performance differences between other SCSI drives and
7137 is not available. However, you may want to contact the
Performance and Evaluation Center (PEC). The PEC may have the
information and resources to comment on the performance of these
two systems.
Thank you.
