ARE DIAGNOSTICS ON THE FIXED DISK OF A RISC
ITEM: RTA000031791
QUESTION:
If I start out with AIX 3.2.0, as I load PTFs to support new devices
not available in the original install, are the diagnostics which are
loaded on the disk drives updated so these new devices can be tested?
If so, is there any indication what "level" of diagnostics you are
running if you boot diagnostics from the fixed disk? (For example,
is there a version number on the initial diagnostics panel or is there
something I should look for when I run the lslpp -h command to tell
what level of diagnostics I'm running?
Assuming that the diagnostics ARE updated over time as PTFs are loaded
to support new devices, is there a way I can update the diagnostics
diskettes which were originally shipped with the system? Is there
a facility to create new diagnostics diskettes (such as the way the
boot diskettes are created -- something I do after I install every
set of PTFs to AIX).
If there is no way to create new diagnostics from the RISC after
AIX has been updated, how does one get new up-to-date diskettes?

A: I will answer your questions in the order they were asked.
Q: If I start out with AIX 3.2.0, as I load PTFs to support
new devices not available in the original install, are the
diagnostics which are loaded on the disk drives updates so
these new devices can be tested?
A: Typically there is one PTF, or group of PTFs, that provide
diagnostic support for devices that are supported by a specific
AIX level. These diagnostics are provided with new devices as
they are required by your system, and will provide diagnostic
support for them.
Q: If so, is there any indication what "level" of diagnostics
you are running if you boot diagnostics from the fixed disk?
A: When you start diagnostics from the hard drive, line 2 of
the opening screen will display the version number of your
current diagnostics. The diagnostic versions correspond with
the level AIX that your system is currently at. These version
numbers correspond as follows:
AIX Version Diagnostics Version
=========== ===================
3.2.0 2.0
3.2.1 2.1
3.2.2 2.1.1
3.2.3 2.2
3.2.3E 2.2
3.2.4 2.3
3.2.5 2.4
3.2.5p 2.4.3
When some devices are installed, the diagnostic support may or may
not update your diagnostics to the next version. To determine
whether or not your diagnostics have been updated to the next
level, issue the 'diag' command before installing the PTFs and
then again after. If the version number is adjusted then your
diagnostics have been fully upgraded to support all the devices
associated with the corresponding level of AIX.
Please note, the diagnostic support for an individual device
can be added to the system without updating diagnostics to the next
level. In this case it is unlikely you would see any change in the
version number.
Q: ...is there a way I can update the diagnostics diskettes which
were originally shipped with the system?
A: Currently, there is no way to update the original diagnostics
diskettes shipped with the system. However, diagnostics provides
a method of creating new diagnostic diskettes from the one installed
on your hard drive. You can find a complete description of this
method in the following readme file:
/usr/lpp/diagnostics/CEREADME
This file contains much information, including the necessary
steps for creating new diagnostics diskettes.
You can also purchase the latest diskettes from you IBM CE.
