RS/6000 SCSI-2 CONTROLLER DEVICE ADDRESSABILITY
ITEM: RTA000030215
QUESTION:
Announcement letter 192-243 specifies SCSI-2 feature #2410 as
supporting a maximum of 4 devices. Is this limitation simply
a reflection of the SCSI-2 bus length limits (cabling limits),
or is the device only supporting 4 devices?
I ask the question as we are planning SCSI repeaters to help
us overcome the SCSI-2 length limits, but we are making the
assumption that the IBM controller will support more than
4 devices.

A: I will answer your questions in the order asked:
1. The limitation of supporting only 4 device with the SCSI-2 is
a direct result of the SCSI-2 bus length limits.
2. The use of a device that would delay the speed of the SCSI-2
is unsupported by IBM.

QUESTION:
For the record, how many device addresses can I have on
a single SCSI-2 controller?
---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
All SCSI controllers are limited to a total of 7 devices. This
is a limitation of the standard.
