NETWARE GOES DOWN WHEN ACCESSING MOUNTED VOLUME
ITEM: RTA000028861
WE HAVE A MODEL 970 RUNNING NETWARE FOR UNIX, WE ADDED ANOTHER VOLUME
WITH A FILE SYSTEM FROM AIX. IT ADDS THE VOLUME AND IS VISIBLE
BUT WHEN YOU TRY TO ACCESS IT FROM THE NOVELL SIDE EVEN WITH A
DIRECTORY, THE NETWARE GOES DOWN. ANY IDEAS?
---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
A: I just tested adding a volume with sconsole and was able to access it
without problems. Below I will list the steps I took.
(On the server)
cd /usr/lpp/netware/bin
./sconsole
Choose option 2 (Configuration)
Choose option 2 (Services Configuration)
Choose option 1 (File Services Configuration)
Choose option 3 (Add a Volume)
New Volume Name test
New Name Space DOS
Would you like to add other volumes/name spaces (y or n)? n
New Host Path /u/test
Would you like to create the host volume path for this volume?
New NWinode File Path /u/test/inodes
Go back to the Main Menu
Choose option 1 (Administration)
Choose option 2 (Startup/Shutdown Netware)
Choose option 5 (Shutdown Netware Services)
Choose option 1 (Startup/Shutdown Netware)
Choose option 2 (Start the Netware Server)
(On the DOS machine)
startnw (to start netware)
login username
I was then able to access the created volume. If your process of
adding a volume differed from this in any way, please append to this
item. Also, were there any error messages or any other information
you could give me to research this further as I could not duplicate
your problem.

Q: I'm going to try your suggestion, and start clean and do exactly the
steps you mentioned, although I beleive I did as you said. I mentioned
this problem when talking to someone at software defect support
and he said the file system to be used for the new volume should be
mounted under opt? Currently that is not what I'm trying to do and
it doesn't appear that is what you did either. Any comment? And what
about the privileges of the mount point. Who should be the owner?
---------- ---------- ---------- --------- ---------- ----------
A: While I will agree with the person you spoke to in Software Defect, I
will add that the purpose for that is to keep things pretty much
organized. All volumes would be mounted under opt. However, that is
not a requirement when creating new volumes. You can mount them on
/u, /tmp, etc...Netware should be the owner.
