7209 R/W CD DRIVE AND CAPABILITIES TO CREATE
ITEM: RTA000026802
QUESTION:
I understand the difference between the 7210 cd-rom drive and the new
7209 r/w cd drive, but how does the 7209 device differ from a worm
drive, or does it differ? My real question is how do you create a write
once, read many (worm) cd? Is it the cd platter that determines whether
or not you can rewrite a cd, or is it a function of the drive? My cust-
omer is interested in the archiving capabilities of a worm drive for
data that cannot be altered once archived. Does the IBM 7209 drive have
this capability?

A: The 7209 is very different than the 7210. The difference is in the
drive and the media, also the 7210 uses the ISO 9960 or high sierra
format for data. The 7209 uses different technology and supports
a jfs filesystem. This means that it would not be a candidate to
use in place of the worm drives. You would still have the protection
of a jfs and this is a removable media which does afford an additional
level of security ie. you can remove it and lock it up and you can
restrict filesystem permissions.
